Notification issued 02-06-2026 at 12:00 PM. New York City Emergency Management urges New Yorkers to prepare for extremely cold temperatures from Saturday, 2/7 to Monday, 2/9. Wear dry, warm clothing, dress in layers, and keep exposed skin covered – including fingertips, earlobes, and noses. Check on neighbors, friends, and relatives, especially older adults and those with disabilities and access and functional needs. Health problems resulting from prolonged exposure to cold include hypothermia, frostbite, and exacerbation of chronic heart and lung conditions. The National Weather Service has issued the following: What: Extreme Cold Warning Where: NYC When: 10:00 AM on 2/7 to 1:00 PM on 2/8 Hazards: Dangerously cold wind chills expected, with wind chill temperatures potentially reaching as low as 20 below zero. Wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes. Hypothermia, frostbite, or even death may occur if proper precautions are not taken. Preparedness Actions: - If you must go outside, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and wear a hat and gloves. - Check on neighbors, friends, and relatives, especially older adults, those with disabilities, and individuals with access and functional needs. - Older adults, infants, people with chronic cardiovascular or lung conditions, people using alcohol or drugs & people with cognitive disabilities (like dementia, serious mental illness or developmental disability) are at increased risk. - Health problems resulting from prolonged exposure to cold include hypothermia, frostbite, and exacerbation of chronic heart and lung conditions.
